How grades are calculated

Your grade percentage is simply the points you earned divided by the total points possible, multiplied by 100. For example, scoring 85 out of 100 gives an 85 % — a solid B. Most American schools then map that percentage to a letter grade on a standard scale: A for 90–100 %, B for 80–89 %, C for 70–79 %, D for 60–69 %, and F for anything below 60 %. Many institutions add plus and minus modifiers (A−, B+, etc.) for finer resolution; this calculator uses a 13-step scale from A+ down to F.

How to use this calculator

Enter the points you earned and the total points possible, then click Calculate grade. The result card shows your percentage, letter grade with a colour-coded badge, the GPA equivalent, a visual progress bar with threshold markers at 60 %, 70 %, 80 %, and 90 %, and a short interpretation. Before you even click the button, the "Points needed" box on the input card tells you exactly how many points are required for an A, B, C, or D — handy for quick planning.

Understanding the grading scale

The standard 4.0 GPA scale assigns numerical values to each letter: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. Plus and minus modifiers shift the value by ±0.3 (e.g. B+ = 3.3, B− = 2.7). A reference table below the calculator lists every letter, its percentage range, and its GPA value for quick look-up.

Practical tips

Use this calculator for individual assignments, midterms, finals, or cumulative course totals. For weighted grading systems where different categories (tests, homework, projects) carry different weights, calculate each category separately and then combine. Grading scales vary by institution— always check your school's policy. This free tool runs entirely in your browser with no sign-up or download. Bookmark it to check grades throughout the semester.
