Mulch quantity is a volume: area times depth. Convert that volume to cubic yards for bulk delivery or to bags for bagged products.

Cubic feet and yards

What mulch volume means

Mulch is sold by volume, not by area alone. The same 200 sq ft bed needs more product at 4 inches than at 2 inches. Cubic yards suit bulk trucks. Bags suit small DIY projects.

How to calculate mulch manually

1. Measure bed area in square feet. 2. Choose depth in inches. 3. Cu ft = area × depth ÷ 12. 4. Yards = cu ft ÷ 27. 5. Bags = cu ft ÷ bag size, then round up. Worked example: 20 ft × 10 ft = 200 sq ft at 3 in. Cu ft = 200 × 0.25 = 50. Yards = 50 ÷ 27 ≈ 1.85. Bags at 2 cu ft = 25.

University of Minnesota Extension recommends applying mulch about 2 to 4 inches deep for garden beds and keeping a mulch free ring around trunks. USDA Forest Service outreach on proper mulching highlights about 2 to 3 inches for most plants and warns against volcano mulching piled against bark. Keep mulch pulled back from stems and trunks.

Bags versus bulk

One cubic yard is exactly 27 cubic feet. With 2 cu ft bags you need 13.5 bags per yard by volume, so buy 14 whole bags for a full yard equivalent. Bulk is often cheaper per yard on large jobs after delivery is included. Compare both cost lines in the results.

Buffer and top ups

Uneven soil, slopes, and fluff loss eat volume. A 5 to 10% buffer is a common planning cushion. If 1 inch of mulch remains and you want 3 inches total, enter existing 1 in so the calculator uses a 2 inch add depth.

Rubber, stone, and wood differences

Volume math is the same for any mulch like product sold by the cubic foot or yard. Weights differ, so truck limits and bag heft change even when volume matches. Colored wood mulch and composted mixes may settle more after rain.

Metric note

If you measure in meters, convert area to square feet (1 m² ≈ 10.7639 sq ft) or convert depth to inches before using this tool. Cubic meters × 1.30795 ≈ cubic yards.

Delivery and fluff factor

Bulk mulch is often sold as loose yards. Fresh bark can settle after rain, so the installed depth looks thinner a week later. That is another reason a small buffer helps on the first order.

Limitations

Estimates assume a uniform depth over a flat area. Slopes, thick existing mats, and fluffy fresh mulch change real coverage. Prices exclude tax and delivery unless you fold delivery into the bulk price field.
