Shoe Size Conversion

Convert a shoe size or foot length into US, UK, EU, Japanese and Mondopoint sizes for men, women and kids. Results are approximate, because brands size their shoes differently.

Measure your foot
  1. Tape paper to a hard floor against a wall.
  2. Stand with your heel on the wall and your weight on the foot.
  3. Mark the tip of your longest toe and measure to the wall.
  4. Measure both feet late in the day and use the longer one.
Quick examples
EU size

Fits a foot about 27.1 cm long, measured from heel to longest toe.

Rounded to the nearest half size. Brand charts can differ by half a size or more, so check the brand's own chart before you buy.

Your calculation

The steps the converter runs, with your numbers.

  1. Foot length from US men's 10: (10 + 22) ÷ 3 = 10.667 in × 25.4 = 270.93 mm.
  2. EU: 0.15 × 270.93 + 2 = 42.64, nearest half size → EU 42.5.
  3. UK: 3 × 10.667 − 23 = 9, nearest half size → UK 9.
  4. US women's: 3 × 10.667 − 20.5 = 11.5, nearest half size → US women's 11.5.
  5. Japan: 270.93 ÷ 10 = 27.09 cm, nearest 0.5 cm → 27 cm.
  6. Mondopoint: 270.93 mm, nearest 5 mm → MP 270.

How the Shoe Size Converter Works

This shoe size converter turns the size you know into every other common system: US men's, US women's, UK, EU, Japanese centimeters and Mondopoint millimeters, plus US and UK children's sizes. It first converts your size back into a foot length, because foot length is the one measurement every system shares. Each target size is then calculated from that length and rounded to the nearest half size, or to the nearest 0.5 cm or 5 mm for the metric systems.

Shoe sizing is not one fixed standard. Most size numbers describe the last, the foot shaped form a shoe is built on, and every brand picks its own last length and toe room. Published charts disagree by half a size or more, so treat the result as a starting point and confirm it against the brand's own chart.

Foot length F (in) = L (mm) ÷ 25.4 US men's = 3 × F − 22 (size 1 = 7 2/3 in, plus 1/3 in per size) US women's = 3 × F − 20.5 (men's size + 1.5) UK adult = 3 × F − 23 (US men's − 1) EU = 0.15 × L + 2 = 1.5 × (L ÷ 10 + 1.33) Japan (cm) = L ÷ 10, nearest 0.5; Mondopoint (mm) = L, nearest 5 US kids = 3 × F − 9.75; UK kids = 3 × F − 10 Example: US men's 10 → F = (10 + 22) ÷ 3 = 10.667 in = 270.93 mm EU = 0.15 × 270.93 + 2 = 42.64 → EU 42.5; UK = 3 × 10.667 − 23 = 9 US women's = 3 × 10.667 − 20.5 = 11.5; Japan 27.09 cm → 27; Mondopoint → 270

The US formula comes from the Brannock Device Company, which describes its size system as linear: a men's size 1 is 7 2/3 inches and each additional size is 1/3 inch longer. UK sizes count the same 1/3 inch steps from a zero point one size lower, so UK equals US men's minus 1. EU sizes count the last in Paris points of 2/3 cm, and this page assumes a last 2 Paris points (1.33 cm) longer than the foot. That allowance comes from the Wikipedia summary of the ISO 19407 conversion model, because the full standard is not free to read, so treat it as a modeling choice.

Japanese sizes and Mondopoint label the foot itself, as JIS S 5037 and ISO 9407 specify, so they need no allowance. Half sizes are rounded up when a value lands exactly halfway, which keeps a little extra room rather than less.

What Each Shoe Size System Measures

The systems differ in unit, step size and starting point. This reference table shows what each number means, which explains why a single US size can match two EU sizes.

SystemUnitStep per sizeWhat the number means
US men's1/3 in (barleycorn)8.47 mmSize 1 fits a 7 2/3 in foot
US women's1/3 in8.47 mmUsually men's size + 1.5
UK1/3 in8.47 mmUS men's size − 1
EUParis point, 2/3 cm6.67 mmLast length in Paris points
Japan (JIS S 5037)cm5 mmFoot length in cm, plus a girth letter

US and UK kids1/3 in8.47 mmStart at 0, end at 13.5, then restart at 1

Because the US and UK step is 8.47 mm and the EU step is 6.67 mm, the scales line up only every few sizes. A round trip from US to EU and back always returns the starting size with these formulas, but EU to US and back can land on a neighboring half size: EU 38.5 converts to US men's 6.5, and US men's 6.5 converts back to EU 38.

How to Measure Your Foot at Home

A measured foot length is the most reliable number to shop with, since it means the same thing in every brand. You need a sheet of paper, a pen, a ruler or tape measure, and ideally a helper.

  1. Tape the paper to a hard floor with one edge touching a wall.
  2. Stand on the paper with your heel against the wall and your weight spread evenly on both feet.
  3. Have your helper mark the tip of your longest toe with the pen held straight up and down. The longest toe is not always the big toe.
  4. Measure from the wall to the mark in centimeters or inches.
  5. Repeat with the other foot and use the longer of the two lengths.

Measure late in the day. The American Podiatric Medical Association advises measuring both feet late in the day and shopping for the larger foot, and the FootCareMD guide from the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society gives the same advice because feet swell and settle while you are up. Wear the socks you plan to wear with the shoes.

When you try shoes on, FootCareMD suggests 3/8 to 1/2 inch, about a finger's width, between your longest toe and the end of the shoe while standing. For children, the APMA suggests about 10 to 15 mm of toe room and a size check every 4 to 6 months.

💡
A Brannock device also measures arch length, from the heel to the ball of the foot. Brannock's fitting instructions say to use the larger of the heel to toe size and the arch size, so a foot with a long arch may need a half size more than its length suggests.

Women's to Men's Shoe Size Conversion

For the same foot, a US women's size is usually 1.5 higher than the US men's size. This page uses that convention, which matches Nike's published chart: men's 10 is women's 11.5, and women's 8 is men's 6.5. Some charts use a gap of 1 and a few use 2, which is one reason unisex sneakers can feel half a size off.

UK and EU sizes normally use one scale for both sexes, so a UK 6 is a UK 6 in men's and women's shoes, although some brands number women's UK sizes differently. Widths do differ: New Balance lists D as the standard men's width and B as the standard women's width, so a women's D is a wide fit while a men's D is standard.

Kids and Youth Shoe Sizes

Children's sizes use a separate scale that starts at 0, ends at 13.5 and then restarts at 1. In the US the small sizes are often marked C for child and the larger ones Y for youth, and youth sizes continue the men's numbers, so a 5Y is the same length as a men's 5. On the children's scale used here, a US kids size equals three times the foot length in inches minus 9.75, and a UK kids size equals three times the foot length minus 10.

US kids 13 → F = (13 + 9.75) ÷ 3 = 7.583 in = 192.62 mm EU = 0.15 × 192.62 + 2 = 30.89 → EU 31 UK kids = 3 × 7.583 − 10 = 12.75 → 13 US youth = 3 × 7.583 − 22 = 0.75 → 1Y; Japan 19.26 cm → 19.5

The two US scales overlap at the restart. A 13.5C fits a 7.75 inch foot and a 1Y fits 7.67 inches, so the two sizes are about 2 mm apart and brands sell 1Y as the next size after 13.5C. A 13.5C foot sits exactly halfway between 1Y and 1.5Y, so the converter rounds it up to 1.5Y, the larger size, while a youth 1 converts back to 13.5C. UK children's sizes end at 13.5, which fits a 7.83 inch foot, and adult UK 1 follows at 8 inches.

ℹ️
Brannock's Junior model allows about one size for growth, and some children's charts build growth room into the size. Measure the foot and compare lengths instead of relying on the size printed in an old pair.

Mondopoint and Japanese Shoe Sizes

Mondopoint is defined in ISO 9407:2019, which sizes footwear by the length of the foot in millimeters and, if required, its width, marked with MP or Mondo before the numbers, such as MP 260. The standard notes that the usual grading interval is 5 mm, with 7.5 mm used in some specialist footwear. Ski boots commonly use Mondopoint: K2 explains that a boot size of 26.5 corresponds to a 265 mm foot.

Japanese sizes follow JIS S 5037:1998, a national standard last confirmed in 2024. It labels shoes by foot length in centimeters with a girth or width designation, and it has separate tables for men and women aged 12 and over and for children aged 11 and under. A Japanese 26.5 therefore means a 26.5 cm foot, which the converter maps to US men's 9.5, UK 8.5 and EU 42.

Because these two systems name the foot rather than the shoe, they are the most dependable numbers to compare across brands. Check which length a chart means, though: Nike notes that the CM size on its shoe boxes and labels is different from foot length.

Wide Width Shoe Sizes: B, D, 2E and 4E

US widths use letters. The Brannock Device Company lists nine widths in the US system, AAA, AA, A, B, C, D, E, EE and EEE, each 3/16 inch apart, and notes that the actual width varies with foot length. New Balance writes the wider fits as 2E, 4E and 6E.

WidthMen's fitWomen's fit

6EXX wideNot listed

The table follows New Balance's published width list; its kids' shoes use M, W and XW instead. Width letters are not standardized between brands, and Brannock's own fitting tips say terms such as narrow and wide are used at each manufacturer's discretion. Nike says its wide shoes have about 1/4 inch (6.35 mm) more girth in the toe box than regular width, and extra wide about 1/2 inch (1.27 cm).

Why Shoe Sizes Differ Between Brands

Two brands can print different numbers for the same foot. Each chooses its own last, toe room, rounding and sometimes its own women's offset. ISO 19407 itself describes its conversion tables as a guideline, because the systems developed without being formalized. The table compares this page with Nike's men's chart.

US men'sFoot, this pageFoot, NikeUK, bothEU, this pageEU, Nike

1111 in11 in104445
1211.33 in11 5/16 in114546

The foot lengths agree to within 1/48 inch and the UK sizes match, but Nike's EU numbers run 1 to 1.5 sizes higher, which points to a larger last allowance. Other charts differ on the US side: K2's ski boot chart pairs a 27.0 cm foot with US men's 9, while the formulas here give US men's 10 for 27.0 cm. Neither chart is wrong; they describe different shoes.

⚠️
The Brannock Device Company says fitters may need to adjust the size for each customer because of differences in manufacturing and styling. Use the converted size to narrow your choice, then try the shoe on or follow the brand's chart.

How to Use the Converter

  • I know my. Pick the system printed in a shoe that fits you well, or a foot length.
  • Size or length. Type the number. Sizes round to the nearest half size.
  • Show the answer in. Choose the system you are shopping in.
  • Measure your foot. Enter a measured length to convert it directly.
  • Quick examples. Load common conversions in one tap.

Common Mistakes

  • Mixing US scales. A women's 9 is a men's 7.5, not a men's 9.
  • Using shoe length as foot length. The inside of a shoe is longer by the toe room.
  • Measuring one foot. Measure both and use the longer.
  • Measuring in the morning. Feet are larger later in the day.
  • Reading box CM labels as foot length. Nike says they differ.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert US shoe size to EU?

Convert the US size to a foot length first, then to EU. On the Brannock scale a US men's size equals three times the foot length in inches minus 22, so US men's 10 fits a foot of 10.67 inches, or 270.93 mm. EU sizes count the last in Paris points of 2/3 cm, and this page adds a 1.33 cm allowance, which gives EU = 0.15 × 270.93 + 2 = 42.64, rounded to EU 42.5. Nike labels the same size EU 44, so always check the brand's own chart.

What is the difference between men's and women's shoe sizes?

In the US, a women's size is usually the men's size plus 1.5 for the same foot length, so a women's 8 matches a men's 6.5 and a men's 10 matches a women's 11.5. Nike's published chart uses this gap, while some charts use 1 and a few use 2. UK and EU sizes normally use one scale for both sexes. Standard widths differ as well: New Balance lists D as the standard men's width and B as the standard women's width, so a women's D is a wide fit.

What size is EU 38 in US women's?

With the formulas on this page, EU 38 corresponds to a foot length of (38 − 2) ÷ 0.15 = 240 mm, or 9.45 inches. That converts to US women's 8, US men's 6.5, UK 5.5 and Japanese 24 cm. Brand charts vary because each brand uses its own last and allowance: Nike's chart, for example, pairs EU 38 with women's 7. If you fall between sizes, measure your foot and compare it with the centimeter column of the brand's chart.

How do I measure my foot for shoe size?

Tape a sheet of paper to a hard floor against a wall, stand on it with your heel touching the wall and your weight on that foot, and mark the tip of your longest toe. Measure from the wall to the mark in centimeters or inches, then repeat with the other foot and use the longer length. Podiatrists and foot surgeons advise measuring late in the day, when feet are at their largest. Enter the result in the Measure your foot box to see every size.

Why are shoe sizes different between brands?

A shoe size describes the last, the foot shaped form a shoe is built on, and each brand chooses its own last length, toe room and rounding. The US and UK scales step by 1/3 inch and the EU scale by 2/3 cm, so the two never line up exactly and charts round in different directions. Nike labels US men's 10 as EU 44, while the foot length formula on this page gives EU 42.5. The Brannock Device Company notes that fitters may need to adjust the size for each shoe.

How do kids shoe sizes convert to youth sizes?

US children's sizes run from 0 to 13.5, often marked C, and then the scale restarts at youth 1, marked Y, which continues the men's numbers. On the children's scale used here, 13.5C fits a 7.75 inch foot and 1Y fits a 7.67 inch foot, so the two sizes are about 2 mm apart and 1Y is sold as the next size up. UK children's sizes also end at 13.5, followed by adult UK 1. A US kids 13 converts to about EU 31 and UK kids 13.
