What Is a Water Intake Calculator?
A water intake calculator estimates how much fluid to plan for in a day. Water supports temperature control, joint lubrication, nutrient transport, and waste removal. Total water includes drinking water, other beverages, and moisture in food.
People use this tool to answer how much water they should drink, how weight changes the target, how exercise and heat raise needs, and how many cups or ounces that equals.
Weight based planning (30 to 35 ml/kg)
Many clinical and consumer tools use about 30 to 35 ml of fluid per kilogram of body weight as a starting range for healthy adults. It is a heuristic, not a National Academies formula. Larger bodies usually need more absolute fluid than smaller bodies at the same activity level.
A popular U.S. shortcut is โhalf your body weight in ouncesโ (pounds รท 2 โ fl oz). That is close to about 30 ml/kg for many adults and is shown as a cross check in the methodology notes.
National Academies Adequate Intake
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine set Adequate Intake (AI) values for total water from beverages plus food. For young adults, the AI is about 3.7 L/day for men and 2.7 L/day for women. In the survey data used to support those figures, beverages supplied roughly four fifths of total water (about 3.0 L for men and 2.2 L for women), with the rest from food.
An AI is a population reference. Intake below the AI does not automatically mean a person is dehydrated, and heat, training, or illness can push needs higher.

Worked example
Adult, 70 kg (about 154 lb), 30 minutes of exercise, temperate climate, 33 ml/kg base. Base = 70 ร 33 = 2,310 ml. Activity add = 350 ml. Total = 2,660 ml โ 2.66 L โ 90 fl oz โ 11.2 cups of 8 oz.
The 30 to 35 ml/kg band alone is 2,100 to 2,450 ml before extras. The adult male NASEM total water AI of 3.7 L is higher because it includes food moisture and reflects median surveyed intake, not a personalized sweat model.
Exercise, heat, and life stages
Sweat rate varies widely. This page uses a simple +350 ml per 30 minutes of exercise and optional heat adds so the math stays transparent. Outdoor workers and endurance athletes often need individualized plans with weigh ins and electrolyte strategies.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding raise fluid needs. The optional add ons here are educational planning bumps. Official AI tables also list higher total water values for pregnancy and lactation than for non pregnant women.
Common mistakes

- Compute base = kg ร selected rate (30, 33, or 35 ml/kg).
- Add activity = (exercise minutes รท 30) ร 350 ml.
- Add climate and optional life stage milliliters.
- Convert total ml to liters (รท 1000), fl oz (รท 29.5735), and 8 oz cups (fl oz รท 8).
